Indian Railways has
a total state monopoly on India's rail transport. It
is one of the largest and busiest rail networks in the
world, transporting eighteen million passengers daily
and more than two million tonnes of freight daily. IR
is the world's largest commercial or utility employer,
with more than 12 million employees.
Railways were first introduced to India in 1853. By
1947, the year of India's independence, there were forty-two
rail systems. In 1951 the systems were nationalised
as one unit, becoming one of the largest networks in
the world. Indian Railways operates both long distance
and suburban rail systems.
The railways traverse
the length and breadth of the country; the routes cover
a total length of more than 63,327 km (39,500 miles).
As of 2008, IR owned about 225,000 wagons, 45,000 coaches
and 8300 locomotives and ran more than 18,000 trains
daily, including about 8,984 passenger trains and 9,387
goods trains.
Online
portal Rediff.com on Thursday announced the launch of
a search service to find seat availability and fares
for trains in India.
The
'Rediff Trains Fare Search' service allows users to
check availability of seats with fares, check PNR
status, get detailed schedule of trains including
real-time arrival and departure status by using a
simple search engine query, the company said in a
statement.
The
service would also offer users a comparative view
of the lowest airfare for the chosen rail route within
the same search query. For example, for a rail journey
from Mumbai-to-Delhi, the search engine will give
results for available trains for that particular day
and also show the lowest air fare ticket available
for the same date.
This
feature has been introduced to help users choose their
mode of travel depending on their budget and plan
their journey more efficiently and conveniently, the
statement said.
The
fare search takes away the pain of compulsory registration
process and remembering difficult station codes by
providing users with a predictive text support for
all stations across India. Once the user has confirmed
the destination and date of travel, Rediff Train fare
search shows all possible options and journey details
in just one click.
The
search data is consistent with the records maintained
by Indian Railway authorities. Once the user has finalised
the appropriate train and wants to book the tickets,
the service gives users options to book the tickets,
either through IRCTC site or through travel agents
whose details are also available on the system.
Rediff has launched
train fare search in collaboration with Indian Railways.
I am giving you the link here under, which i guess flexible
to use. I typed "ban" (for bangalore) in the
from field and it gave the list of all railway stations
in India with the word "ban" and similarly
for chennai "che". It also has two other fields
date of travel and class of travel. After inputing the
data, it will give the list of all trains in this case
between bangalore and chennai. It displays the name
of the train which is also a link (if click on the train
name, it shows the number of stops in between), arrival
time and departure time, links to check availability
and route. It displays the number of trains according
to class of travel selected and fare for that class
of travel. If class of travel is selected as "any",
it displays all those trains plying between bangalore
and chennai.
http://indian-railways.rediff.com/index.php
And the other railways info is passengers can get wait
listed tickets through e-ticket system in the coming
days. Plz see the link.

Trains/Fare/Accommodation
link on Indian Railways website
Does anyone know what happened to the 'Trains/Fare/Accommodation'
link on Indian Railways website, it's not worked for
about 5 or 6 days now, I feel like my right arm has
been cut off.
Is there another way to enter individual stations (not
main stations) and search for train connections?
The 'Trains between Important Stations' link
doesn't come close to the usefulness of the 'Trains/Fare/Accommodation'
link.
the link to Train/Fare/Accomodation
section from the main page of
www.indianrail.gov.in website is, as usual, working
very slowly, but you can skip it if you use the direct
addreess of the "Trains/Fare/Reservation Availability
Status" section (which is basically the same, with
the difference that it gives the possibility to enter
the station NAMES instead of CODES):
http://www.indianrail.gov.in/inet_srcdest_names.html
I have this address in my "preferred" ones,
I use always this direct link when I want to search
for some Indian train time, I never go to the homepage
(it gives a million pop-ups usually!!).
The direct link above works very well all the time.
Some of our
customers wanted more clarity on train ticket charges.
Below is the explanation of the different fare components
that you pay when you book train ticket through us:
- Base fare – Base
fare of the train ticket. Children and senior women
are charged 50% of the adult base fare. Senior men
are charged 70% of the base fare.
- Railway charges
– These charges include reservation and superfast
fee, IRCTC service fee and tatkal charges (if any).
- Cleartrip fee –
We charge a service fee of Rs. 10 for Non-AC classes
and Rs. 20 for AC classes for providing you a fast
and friendly interface to search and book tickets
- Transaction fee
– 1.8% of the total of above. Payment gateways charge
us this amount for processing your transaction. IRCTC
charges a similar transaction fee if you choose to
book through them.
